    <title>Agreement to Pursue 96 Avenue NE Extension </title>
    <link>http://www.calgaryairport.com/News/tabid/91/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/4/language/en-US/Agreement-to-Pursue-96-Avenue-NE-Extension.aspx</link>
    <description>Calgary &amp;ndash; The City of Calgary and The Calgary Airport Authority have reached an agreement to pursue funding for the 96 Avenue tunnel and road network connecting Airport Trail to M&amp;eacute;tis Trail.
The agreement sees the two parties contribute $90 million towards the tunnel&amp;rsquo;s $287 million cost as part of a multi-partner funding proposal with the provincial and federal governments. Mayor Dave Bronconnier will lead efforts to secure $98.6 million each from the provincial and federal governments by March 1, 2010.
The City will design and build the tunnel and take over ongoing maintenance once the project is constructed.&amp;nbsp;
&amp;ldquo;This agreement confirms The City&amp;rsquo;s commitment to enhance the northeast road network for Calgarians,&amp;rdquo; said Mayor Bronconnier.
&amp;ldquo;The extension of Airport Trail was part of our Plan It Calgary discussions and part of our long range plan. City Council has already committed our share of funding for this tunnel that will support traffic movement before the airport builds a vital new runway.&amp;rdquo;
Garth Atkinson, president and CEO of The Calgary Airport Authority, said the Authority is pleased to support The City of Calgary as it moves forward in its discussions with the federal and provincial governments regarding funding for the Airport Trail extension.
&amp;ldquo;We are on track with the parallel runway project and timing is now critical if the Airport Trail extension is to be constructed at the same time as the runway,&amp;rdquo; said Atkinson. &amp;ldquo;Called by some the most important 14,000 feet in Alberta, this new runway at YYC will keep Calgary connected to the world and along with other airport expansion plans, ensure that we have the capacity to support economic growth in Alberta.&amp;rdquo;
The tunnel is intended to extend the existing portion of 96 Avenue eastward to 36 Street NE. It is the first phase of the long-term project that includes construction of a new 14,000-foot north-south runway and closure of Barlow Trail between 48 Avenue and Airport Road NE.
The new runway, which will be in service by 2014, is one component of a $1.8 billion expansion of airport facilities planned over the next six years. The schedule for the runway project includes the closure, in April 2011, of a portion of Barlow Trail between 48 Avenue and Airport Road NE. The imminent closure of this section of road has initiated the call from The City of Calgary to both levels of government to define its ability to provide financial support for the Airport Trail extension.

    <title>Mexicana Consolidates Its Presence In Alberta By Adding Frequencies To Mexico City From YYC</title>

    <description>Now five weekly flights between Calgary and Mexico City

Calgary, Alberta, Canada, November 17, 2009 &amp;ndash; Starting January 2010, Mexicana Airlines, Mexico&amp;acute;s largest international airline will increase its service between Mexico City and Calgary International Airport (YYC) from four, to five flights per week.
Airline Officers said that market research indicated the airline should consolidate its presence in Alberta using only YYC as its gateway. The possibility to return in the near future to Edmonton will continue to be studied.&amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;We appreciate the strong support we receive in Alberta from travellers; and we will keep our promise of offering the best available service and most extensive route network in Mexico, Central and South America to all of Alberta.&amp;rdquo; said Jorge Goytortua, Mexicana&amp;acute;s Regional VP for North America.
Mr. Goytortua also added, &amp;ldquo;As a result of the global economic downturn affecting the travel industry, the H1N1 flu crisis and the restrictions imposed on Mexican Nationals travelling to Canada, the airline had to take a deep look into the bottom line, making difficult decisions in order to maintain the company afloat.&amp;nbsp; In spite of today&amp;rsquo;s difficult environment, we are committed to the Canadian market and believe this situation will change in the short term, allowing us to reconsider new destinations serving Canadian travellers.&amp;rdquo;
&amp;ldquo;We are very pleased to see the increased service of Mexicana Airlines in Calgary,&amp;rdquo; said Mayor of Calgary, Dave Bronconnier. &amp;ldquo;Adding more frequency from Calgary to Mexico City means more flexibility and ease for travelling on business, and more opportunity for Calgarians and others from across the province who are seeking some sun and fun at Mexico&amp;rsquo;s world famous beaches, resorts and beyond.&amp;rdquo;
&amp;ldquo;It is great news that Mexicana has reaffirmed its commitment to serve YYC and the Alberta Marketplace by increasing the frequency of service at YYC,&amp;rdquo; said Garth Atkinson, President and CEO of The Calgary Airport Authority. &amp;ldquo;We are confident they will continue to do well using YYC as their international gateway to Alberta.&amp;rdquo;
The airline&amp;rsquo;s flight schedules to Calgary will remain unchanged, operating, as of January 2010, five weekly services.&amp;nbsp; Schedules have proved to be ideal for business and leisure travellers allowing for connections in Mexico City&amp;rsquo;s International Airport, the airline&amp;rsquo;s main Hub.&amp;nbsp; For more information please contact your travel professional or through the web site www.mexicana.com.

    <description>Calgary, AB &amp;ndash; YYC&amp;rsquo;s commitment to sustainability is seen throughout the year, but in support of Earth Hour 2009, the airport further reduced its energy consumption between 8:30-9:30 pm on March 28, 2009 more than 20%.
Without affecting life safety systems, impacting operations or inconveniencing the travelling public, YYC turned off non-emergency lights and mechanical systems to be a part of Earth Hour 2009. Working with airport partners, Calgary Airport Authority electricians developed a plan to reduce energy consumption in the Air Terminal Building for the 2009 Earth Hour event, once again showcasing YYC&amp;rsquo;s commitment to being an environment leader, locally and nationally. As Canada&amp;rsquo;s first GoGreen airport, Calgary International Airport continues to implement leading edge initiates and technologies to grow Canada&amp;rsquo;s third busiest airport, without increasing its environmental footprint. YYC, it starts here.

    <description>Calgary, AB. &amp;ndash; The Calgary International Airport (YYC) reached new heights in 2008, with passenger volume increasing 2.0%, to 12.5 million passengers annually, making YYC the third busiest airport in Canada, after Toronto and Vancouver.
It was a busy year at YYC. The airport welcomed Lufthansa and Mexicana Airlines with new scheduled non-stop service to Frankfurt and Mexico City, respectively. Most recently, KLM announced new service to Amsterdam beginning May 2009, increasing our passengers&amp;rsquo; options for non-stop service to Europe. Throughout 2008, we also saw the addition of many new domestic and international destinations, along with increased frequencies to current destinations.
&amp;ldquo;YYC is Alberta&amp;rsquo;s premier international and cargo gateway. The airport is well positioned to continue to grow and develop as Alberta&amp;rsquo;s economic gateway to the world,&amp;rdquo; said Garth Atkinson, President and CEO of The Calgary Airport Authority. &amp;ldquo;YYC will continue to move forward with our mandate to focus on growing Calgary International Airport to meet the needs of our growing community and region.&amp;rdquo;
To accommodate YYC&amp;rsquo;s growth, The Calgary Airport Authority began construction on a new 1600 stall parkade, scheduled to open in the fall of 2009. Several airside and groundside improvements were completed, keeping Calgary International Airport at the ready for the projected double-digit growth over the next ten years.
The Calgary Airport Authority also plays a key role in the community, and was recently named as one of Alberta&amp;rsquo;s Top 40 Employers. Also in 2008, The Calgary Airport Authority initiated an airport-wide customer service program aimed at enhancing our passengers&amp;rsquo; experience at YYC. Passenger experience enhancements also included the introduction of free Wi-Fi throughout the Air Terminal Building, a free Cell Phone Lot and new digital TV service. &amp;nbsp;
