FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 17, 2010
YYC Holiday Travel Tips
Christmas Holiday Information
December is a busy time of year for Calgary International Airport (YYC). During the holiday season, it is recommended that additional time should be allowed when travelling to and from YYC due to road conditions, weather and general congestion caused by increased vehicle, passenger and baggage volumes. Here are some tips and general information to help reduce travel-related stress or delays during the holiday season.
Security Tips and Restricted Items
Passenger and baggage security screening at airports in Canada is provided by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA). For the most current information on tips to avoid delays during this important process, please go to http://www.catsa-acsta.gc.ca.
Flight Check-In
A frequent question received by The Calgary Airport Authority is ‘When should I arrive at the airport for my flight?”
Each airline sets its own recommended check-in time dependant on the destination. Generally, one hour should be the minimum for flights within Canada and two hours for destinations outside of Canada.
Web check-in services may be available through your airline. Web check-in allows passengers to choose seats and check-in as early as 24 hours prior to departure. Check your airline’s website for more information.
Baggage Allowances
Each airline has their own luggage allowance policies. Luggage restrictions can include weight and number of bags permitted to be checked without charge and size and number of carry-on items permitted on-board. Please check with your airline for information.
Parking
Park Closer this holiday season! YYC recently lowered weekly rates in both Parkades and the Economy Lot. New weekly rates include $39.95 per week in the Economy Lot, $59 per week in Parkade 2 and $99 per week in Parkade 1. With so many choices, parking at YYC has never been easier.
Click here for more parking information on rates and parking lot locations.
Don’t forget the free 30 minute parking in the Short-term parking area and the Cell Phone park and wait lot. The Cell Phone lot is located on north side of Airport Road (just to the right as you enter YYC), before the parkade entrance – just look for the purple and white signs! Arriving passengers will be able to collect their items, call their ride waiting in the Cell Phone lot and meet them at the designated area on the arrivals level. Fast, easy and free!
Other ground transportation options include taxis, sedans; the YYC airport shuttle or Calgary Transit. Associated Cab and Allied Limousine are YYC’s on-demand taxi and sedan ground transportation services available on the Arrivals Level 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Click here for more information on these great transportation options.
Winter Coat Storage
Leaving the cold winter weather and going somewhere warm for Christmas? The Airport Information Centre, located on the arrivals level, mid-terminal adjacent to Baggage Carousel Four is great place to store your coat while you’re away! Call 403-735-1449 for information and storage rates. The Information Centre, Storage and Lost Article hours of operation are daily from 6:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m.
Baggage Assistance
The Calgary Airport Authority offers complimentary baggage carts located throughout the terminal and adjoining parking areas.
For larger, heavier or multiple items, uniformed ‘red cap’ Porter Services are also available. Porters are compensated by gratuities, with $1 to $2 per bag considered customary. To pre-arrange this service for groups, call 403-291-2653.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 24, 2010

CALGARY, AB – A mock emergency response training exercise, Operation Soteria, took place this morning at Calgary International Airport (YYC). Operation Soteria, which simulated the crash of fictitious airline ‘Vega Airlines,’ provided multiple agencies with the opportunity to practice their emergency response plans and coordinate communication between airport agencies, airline and emergency agencies that would be involved in the event of an aircraft incident.
Numerous government and support agencies responded including the City of Calgary’s Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services, Calgary Police Service, Transport Canada, NAV CANADA and the Transportation Safety Board. Emergency response personnel treated and triaged a number of volunteer ‘casualties’ who were in full make-up and were given pre-scripted visible and hidden symptoms.
Approximately 55 invited observers were on-site from airlines, government and various support agencies to learn from witnessing the field response activities first-hand.
There was also activity in the air terminal with behind-the-scenes emergency coordination activities providing support to the incident and handling numerous simulated public inquiries. A ‘telephone simulation team’ responded to the inquiries, testing the airport’s ability to handle a high volume of calls in an emergency. Volunteer airline staff assisted ‘family and friends’ meeting Vega Airlines Flight 8911, while WestJet Airlines tested their emergency response plan by playing the airline’s role in and providing flight and cabin crew to the site simulation team.
“Training exercises like Operation Soteria are an essential part of putting into practice Emergency Response Plans, not only to assess how YYC’s plans work during an incident, but how they work in partnership with the participating agencies that also play a role in emergency response at the airport,” said Garth Atkinson, President and CEO of The Calgary Airport Authority. “Operation Soteria required months of planning by the Authority and our partners, and I am confident that lessons learned here today will only make our collective emergency response plans even stronger.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 2, 2010

Calgary, AB. – This afternoon, The Calgary Airport Authority and Associated Cab (Alta.) Ltd. signed a six-year contract to provide on-demand taxi services at Calgary International Airport (YYC). The Authority thoroughly reviewed multiple Request for Proposal (RFP) submissions and awarded the taxi contract to Associated Cab, effective June 7, 2010.

This on-demand service contract limits taxis waiting in the taxi holding area at the airport to Associated Cab drivers, however, drivers from other taxi companies continue to be permitted to drop off customers and pick-up pre-arranged passengers at Calgary International Airport.

Associated Cab, who also provides sedan services at YYC, is committed to maintaining a high level of customer service, while offering the required number of taxis to serve the airport. Travellers can be assured that customer service will continue to be a priority for the Authority and Associated Cab, while offering a constant, reliable service to travellers arriving and departing YYC.

Associated Cab, founded in 1978, offers a high level of service and some of the most experienced drivers in the industry. Well known for its modern fleet, clean white cabs and uniformed drivers, the company has been the recipient of the Consumers Choice Award consecutively from 2003 through 2010. Associated is also a leader in accessible taxi services and is committed to sustainability, being one of the first taxi companies to introduce hybrid vehicles into its fleet.

Although on demand taxi trips at YYC make up less than 10 per cent of the total number of taxi trips in the city of Calgary, the Authority is confident in Associated Cab’s ability to be a good partner in providing a high level of customer service, while growing its own business as the airport continues to grow in support of the city, region and province.

Load factors in excess of 80% have been reported on this route
Some 12,320 passengers boarded in the first quarter of 2010, surpassing figures for 2009.

Passengers who choose Grupo Mexicana can take advantage of the company’s extensive network covering major cities in Mexico, Europe, Central and South America or fly to practically any destination in the world with oneworld, the global alliance that Mexicana partnered with last year.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) will be training in their Tornado GR4 aircraft at Calgary International Airport (YYC) from May 13-24 in advance of their deployment to Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan. The training they complete in Calgary is a part of a larger training program that takes them across North America to ensure that ultimately they can provide support not only the British Army but all coalition forces in Afghanistan.
Wing Commander Jim Frampton (Officer Commanding No 12 (Bomber) Squadron, Royal Air Force) said: “I greatly appreciate the opportunity for my team to train at Calgary Airport over this period and am grateful for the hospitality that our hosts and the people of Calgary have shown. The training we complete during our time in Canada, though noisy, will ensure we can provide the best possible air support to our colleagues on operations.”
The British Armed Forces have a close and cooperative relationship with their Canadian counterparts, and have a long-established training ground in Suffield, Alberta. The RAF will be flying 4 missions per day from YYC to this training area in Suffield.

YYC continues to build and develop airport facilities with leading sustainability designs and once again reduced its energy consumption numbers in support of Earth Hour with a reduction of 28.8 per cent on March 27, 2010.
Calgary Airport Authority electricians and airport partners worked together to successfully reduce energy consumption at YYC between 8:30–9:30 p.m. by turning off non-emergency lights and mechanical systems at YYC, all without affecting life safety systems, impacting operations or inconveniencing the travelling public.
YYC’s commitment to environmental leadership includes designing, building and maintaining YYC facilities with sustainable features. As Canada’s first GoGreen airport, YYC will continue to implement leading edge initiatives and technologies to grow the airport to meet the needs of the travelling public and airport partners without compromising environmental standards.

Direct link with Asia offers convenient connecting flights throughout Asia

CALGARY, March 27, 2010 – Air Canada today inaugurated its first non-stop flight between Calgary and Tokyo, the only direct link between Alberta and Asia. Launch celebrations took place this morning at Calgary International Airport prior to the departure of flight AC009, with local dignitaries including Calgary Airport Authority Chair Douglas Mitchell, Calgary’s Deputy Mayor Jim Stevenson, and Alberta Minister of Tourism, Parks and Recreation Cindy Ady among others in attendance. To mark the occasion, customers were entertained by Japanese drummers at check-in, while Geisha presented a customary Japanese tea ceremony. Air Canada President & CEO Calin Rovinescu and Calgary Airport Authority Vice President, Marketing Stephan Poirier each painted the eye of a traditional Japanese Daruma doll, symbolizing good luck for the new venture.

“Everyone at Air Canada, especially our Calgary employee team here are thrilled to launch our newest international route today between Calgary and Tokyo,” said Mr. Rovinescu prior to boarding the inaugural flight on a trip to meet Canadian business leaders in Japan, Korea and China. “Air Canada is now giving Albertans travelling on business or leisure, as well as freight forwarders non-stop convenience to a major Asian gateway. In addition, our new service to Tokyo offers a multitude of connecting flights with our Star Alliance partners to key destinations throughout Asia including Hong Kong, Manila, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Bangkok, Taipei and several points across Japan. With the support of the Calgary business community, Tourism Alberta and our travel partners, this is the first step towards building a year-round, daily service.
“Air Canada has invested significantly in the Calgary market over the past year, strategically responding to strong demand. Air Canada’s superior schedule, unparalleled choice of non-stop destinations, award-winning products and service and loyalty benefits through Aeroplan clearly make Air Canada the airline of choice for customers. With today’s launch of new non-stop service to Tokyo, we have introduced six new routes serving Calgary over the past year, including daily non-stop flights to Portland OR and London ON, summer seasonal service to Whitehorse YT and winter seasonal non-stop flights to Maui and Honolulu last December,” concluded Mr. Rovinescu.
"With the addition of Air Canada’s new non-stop flight to Tokyo, business and leisure travellers in Alberta now have a direct link to Asia, through Alberta’s premier international passenger and cargo gateway," said Stephan Poirier, Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer for The Calgary Airport Authority. ”This much anticipated route makes Calgary one of only three cities in Canada with scheduled air service to both Asia and Europe. It represents a serious additional competitive advantage for our city and province solidifying Calgary's position as the best serviced city per capita in terms of air service in Canada."
In addition to offering efficient connections at Narita to points throughout Asia with Air Canada’s Star Alliance partners, ANA, Asiana, THAI and United Airlines, Air Canada’s Calgary-Japan flights are timed to offer convenient connections to and from communities across Alberta and Western Canada served by Air Canada.
Air Canada’s Calgary-Tokyo flights operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, departing Calgary at 12:45 p.m. and arriving in Narita the following day at 2:25 p.m. Flights depart Narita on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 4:00 p.m., arriving Calgary same day at 10:45 a.m.
Air Canada operates its Calgary-Tokyo flights with fully refurbished 211-seat Boeing 767-300 ER aircraft offering a choice of Economy Class and Executive First service featuring 24 lie-flat bed suites. Further details and a virtual tour of Air Canada’s new cabin amenities including complimentary personal seatback entertainment at every seat throughout the aircraft are available at: http://www.aircanada.com/en/travelinfo/onboard/cabincomfort.html

YYC Airport Hub Of Activity In 2009

Development and growth on the horizon of Calgary International Airport (YYC)
Calgary, AB – YYC celebrated another successful year, welcoming new services and increased capacity in 2009 and in response to passenger feedback, opened new facilities and introduced state-of-the-art equipment for busy travellers.
YYC was the hub for many exciting events and announcements in a year of global decreases in air travel, and continues to be Alberta’s premier international passenger and cargo gateway to the world, welcoming 12.2 million passengers in 2009.
YYC saw an increase in new destinations and frequencies throughout North America and various sun destinations with WestJet Airlines and Air Canada. Announcements throughout this busy year included the consolidation and increased frequency of Mexicana Airlines in YYC to/from Mexico City, solidifying its presence in Alberta. YYC also welcomed the much anticipated inaugural flight of KLM’s direct service from YYC to Amsterdam and coming in March 2010 is YYC’s new non-stop connection to Asia, with the addition of Air Canada’s YYC-Tokyo flight.
The Calgary Airport Authority continued to focus on providing a high level of customer service to passengers in 2009. YYC welcomed a new Airport Shuttle Service, which provides another great ground transportation option for travellers. In addition, the Authority reduced weekly parking rates at YYC in December 2009, just in time for the busy holiday travel season. A number of service enhancements were implemented in 2009 including a major expansion of the pre-board screening area at Concourse A, as well as many new and renovated retail product offerings. The new ‘Rocky Mountain Lounge’ also opened in September, YYC’s second common use lounge, which offers a first-class experience to all outbound US passengers.
Other news at YYC included the opening of our new 1,950 stall parkade and the introduction of Express Pay machines throughout YYC, which allow travellers to pay for their parking and exit through a dedicated express pay lane.
As a major economic engine for the City of Calgary and the Alberta region, YYC will break ground on the largest expansion project the airport has ever seen in early 2011. The Airport Development Project (ADP) includes the construction of a new Runway and International Concourse. The ADP will contribute approximately 10.5 million hours of employment to the Calgary economy and will significantly enhance the existing $6 billion value-added GDP contribution Calgary International Airport makes to the local economy. The ADP will be essential for YYC’s continued growth and development, enabling the airport to keep up with projected passenger volumes, which are expected to increase as the Canadian and global economy begins to rebound in 2010.

96th Avenue Tunnel Option Preserved Following New Runway

For Immediate Release – March 8, 2010

(Calgary, AB.) The City of Calgary and the Calgary Airport Authority have agreed on a plan to ensure future road capacity options are preserved following the construction of a new runway. The plan involves preserving the land access points and planning framework for the potential development of a future east extension of 96th Ave NE through a tunnel under the 4th runway at Calgary International Airport, as well as upgrades to the existing road network adjacent to the Calgary International Airport.

The Calgary Airport Authority supported the City’s efforts to obtain funding from the provincial and federal governments. With the realization that funding will not be available at this time, both parties have agreed to revisit the possibility of adding the 96th Avenue extension, and associated tunnel under the 4th Runway, at a future date.

Barlow Trail between 48th Avenue NE and Airport Road will be permanently closed on April 3, 2011. The City of Calgary is confident that with the completion of Stoney Trail and with numerous planned upgrades to the northeast road network, including the completion of Metis Trail, the road network will fully accommodate all current and future traffic requirements.

To support the City and the community, the Calgary Airport Authority has undertaken to complete a new road connection between 36th Street NE and 48th Avenue NE. This work, which is scheduled to be undertaken in 2010 at an estimated value of $ 10.5 million, will provide a new alternative road connection between McKnight Blvd. and Country Hills Blvd.

The Authority will continue on-schedule with the Airport Development Project (ADP), comprised of the new International Concourse and the 4th Runway. Preliminary construction works for the ADP are already underway and major excavation and grading will commence in January 2011. The ADP will provide 10.5 million hours of employment and is vital to the continued economic prosperity of Calgary.

New UPS Hub to Connect Calgary to the World

$30 Million Airport Facility to Expedite International Shipments
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Feb. 22 /CNW/ - UPS (NYSE:UPS) today announced the official opening of its new distribution centre at the Calgary International Airport (YYC), a state-of-the-art hub to provide businesses with direct access to the U.S. and international markets.
The facility, built at a cost of $30 million, will be central to the continued growth of Alberta's economy, allowing local businesses to tap into global growth markets such as China, India and Mexico.
"Despite the recent recession, Calgary's economy still stands as a growth engine for Canada with many businesses in the area looking to take advantage of emerging markets overseas," said Mike Tierney, president of UPS Canada, who was joined by UPS International President Dan Brutto for the official opening.
"The rise of middle classes in China and India offers great potential to businesses in the Calgary area," Tierney continued. "And this new facility will provide our customers with access to those markets in a more convenient and reliable fashion than ever before."
Economists predict China will become the biggest economy in the world by 2050, while the rise of the middle class in India serves as a boon to entrepreneurs in Canada looking to capitalize on consumer demand for western goods. In 2008, India's purchasing power parity stood at US $2.3 trillion, while China's stood at US $8 trillion.
The 145,000-square-foot distribution facility has been under construction since June of 2008 and will allow UPS to double its package processing capability. The hub houses 157 trucks for ground transportation to surrounding communities in addition to serving as a staging point for aircraft.
The facility also will serve to boost the local economy by employing more than 400 Calgarians and contributing to the transportation sector - one of the few sectors to see growth during the 2009 recession.
The new hub will sort and distribute both air and ground packages and is a direct response to a surge in UPS business. The global logistics company's shipment volume from the Calgary area has increased 60 per cent since 2003.
The UPS facility is part of the YYC Global Logistics Park, a highly efficient and multifunctional international trade and transportation hub that moves high volumes of goods to and from local, regional and international destinations.
"The new UPS facility is a welcome addition to the YYC Global Logistics Park," said Stephan Poirier, vice president and chief commercial officer. "Over the last decade YYC has solidly established itself as a major transportation and logistics hub in North America, making it a strategic location where cargo and passenger airlines can develop a strong link with their customers in Western Canada and around the globe."
Air cargo tonnage has more than doubled at YYC from 66,000 tonnes in 1999 to 134,000 tonnes in 2007. Today, YYC generates more than $6 billion of annual economic activity, accounting for approximately 10 per cent of Calgary's gross domestic product. More than 15,000 people work on airport land.

Exhibit about diversity finds home at Calgary International Airport
CALGARY, AB – International travellers and returning Canadians will now be greeted with 35 images from the renowned Milestones Project, a visual exhibit that aims to highlight our commonality through photos of children from around the world. As the first airport in Canada to host the exhibit, YYC is pleased to welcome the project, which has been founded by Dr. Richard and Michele Steckel.
“It is an honour to become part of the Calgary International Airport (YYC) community via our photographs and messages of mutual respect and understanding,” said Dr. Richard Steckel.
The Milestones Project is a collection of photos of children experiencing moments that are familiar to us all, from a child’s first steps to a first tooth. These milestones show that despite race, culture or religion, everyone shares common traits and that those traits unite us. The exhibit can be seen throughout the Canada Border Services Agency’s international arrivals area at YYC.
“It is appropriate that when people come into Canada, whether they are visiting or coming home, they can see this display and be reminded that we really do celebrate diversity in this country,” said Garth Atkinson, President and Chief Executive Officer for The Calgary Airport Authority. “We are excited to be a part of this project.”
“CBSA is proud to host the Milestones exhibit,” said Candace Lyle, Chief of Operations at Calgary International Airport. “We feel that the location of the project is fitting considering CBSA is the first face of Canada.”
The Milestones Project was founded in 1998, and has been brought to Calgary with the assistance of Dexterity Consulting and various sponsors. It is a photographic tribute to humanity meant to inspire individual action to eliminate discrimination and create a culture of peace. For more information visit www.milestonesproject.com.
