    <title>Runways at YYC and YBW will be renumbered in 2013</title>
    <link>http://www.calgaryairport.com/News/tabid/91/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/129/language/en-US/Runways-at-YYC-and-YBW-will-be-renumbered-in-2013.aspx</link>
    <description>In 2013, runways at Calgary International Airport (YYC) and Springbank Airport (YBW) will be getting new numbers. So, how and why do runways get these designations? And why do they need to change now?
Runways are numbered according to the magnetic heading. For instance, Runway 34 at YYC is numbered 34 because it lines up with 340 degrees magnetic and because the magnetic north pole is slowly moving (this movement is part of the earth&#39;s natural process), every 60 or 70 years runways have to be given new designations. The renumbering, which is a regulatory requirement, will be a massive undertaking for The Calgary Airport Authority, which manages both YYC and YBW airports. In total 95 signs at YYC will need to be changed, in addition to 23 signs at YBW.&amp;nbsp;
The new designation for Runway 16/34 will become 17/35, Runway 10/28 will become 11/29, and Runway 07/25 will be 08/26.
According to the Natural Resources Canada website, based on Calgary&amp;rsquo;s location the movement of the&amp;nbsp;magnetic north pole&amp;nbsp;results in a shift of 1/60 of a degree each year.
As part of the process, the Authority has been meeting regularly with stakeholder groups to ensure that airport partners are well informed of the changes. In addition, national airport and pilot publications will be updated as part of the process, and voice advisories will be used to inform pilots departing or arriving to YYC. </description>

    <title>YYC welcomes over one million passengers every month of 2012!</title>
    <link>http://www.calgaryairport.com/News/tabid/91/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/46/language/en-US/YYC-welcomes-over-one-million-passengers-every-month-of-2012.aspx</link>
    <description>Calgary, AB. - It was another record-breaking year at Calgary International Airport (YYC), with over 13.6 million passengers travelling through the airport in 2012. While passenger traffic grew just over six per cent last year, cargo activity also grew with an increase of five per cent to over 117,000 metric tonnes. YYC is the leading passenger hub and cargo gateway in Alberta with the most extensive passenger service network in central Canada and is one of only three airports in Canada to offer passengers nonstop scheduled service to both Europe and Asia.
Commercial Development Highlights:
The landscape of YYC is changing both outside and inside the facility with new shops and services, including some firsts for Canadian airports. A new boutique iStore and iStore express automated retail shop opened in 2012, along with the only Burger King Whopper Bar in a Canadian airport. HSBC also made YYC part of an exclusive group of 43 worldwide airports with the introduction of the newly branded HSBC passenger bridges. YYC is one of only four Canadian airports to join this exclusive group.
The process to fill the new international terminal with world-class retailers and restaurants has begun. A Request for Expressions of Interest (REFI) was issued in 2012. The YYC Commercial team is now reviewing the submissions to ensure the new expansion offers the best selection of shops and services to YYC passengers. Stay tuned for more details in 2013.
Air Service Highlights:
There is more great news on the passenger network front at YYC. Calgary saw more frequencies in 2012 and new destinations with WestJet&#39;s announcement of their new services to Chicago and Manzanillo. Alberta&#39;s only connection to Asia continues to be a tremendous success story, with Air Canada&#39;s announcement of an increase in frequency from three to five flights to Tokyo, Narita in the summer and three flights a week in the winter. YYC&#39;s European connection also continues to be strong with KLM&amp;rsquo;s announcement of an increase in frequency on their Amsterdam route. The service now offers daily flights in the summer and flights five days a week in the winter. Albertans now have more destinations and airlines to choose from when flying out of YYC.
Land Development at YYC:
YYC added over 1.8 million square feet of warehouse space on airport land in the last decade, more than any other airport in the country. Land development activity at YYC continued to track according to plan in 2012 with the development of the Deerfoot North Trade Park. Construction began on Sunwest Aviation&amp;rsquo;s 130,000 square-foot combined hangar and office complex, and Million Air, a fixed-based operator for private aviation services, broke ground at YYC. The Million Air facility will contain a departure lounge, offices and a 50,000 square-foot hangar. Also in 2012, Northwest Geomatics erected a 50,000 square-foot hangar at the Deerfoot North Trade Park. Phase 1 of the development consists of a large hangar and accompanying offices.

Airport Development Program:&amp;nbsp;
The Airport Development Program (ADP) is on time and on budget. The addition of the new runway and the expansion of the terminal building is the largest construction project in Calgary&#39;s history. The Program made major headway as we move towards opening the runway in 2014 and the terminal in 2015.
A significant amount of work has taken place in the past 12 months on the Runway Development Project (RDP) site.
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Over 8.3 million cubic metres of material has been moved
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Over 163,000 cubic metres of concrete has been placed
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; 1,865 inset lighting base cans have been installed
The International Facilities Project (IFP) is well underway. The addition to YYC has started to take shape with windows and walls forming the main terminal building area of the new international check-in hall.
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Building excavation is now complete with 470,000 cubic metres of material removed
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Over 67,600 cubic metres of concrete has been poured
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Over 521 geothermal holes have been drilled (89 per cent complete).
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; The Departures check-in hall roof has 18 of 38 structural steel trusses installed
&amp;middot;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; The first IFP escalator has been installed
The ADP will provide much needed airport capacity, vital to our airport partners&amp;rsquo; growth and development, and will solidify YYC&amp;rsquo;s position as an important economic growth generator for the city, region, and province.&amp;nbsp;
Other 2012 highlights:
For a third time, The Calgary Airport Authority was named a &#39;Top Employer&#39; in Alberta. This special designation recognizes employers that lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work.
WestJet also announced Calgary was selected to be the headquarters of their new regional airline, Encore. The new addition to the WestJet family will be located on the YYC campus and final designs for their facilities are currently underway.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 18, 2012
Christmas Holiday Information
December is a busy time of year for Calgary International Airport (YYC). During the holiday season, it is recommended that additional time should be allowed when travelling to and from YYC due to road conditions, weather and general congestion caused by increased vehicle traffic, as well as passenger and baggage volumes.
Here are some tips and general information to help reduce travel-related stress or delays during the holidays.
Security Tips and Restricted Items
Passenger and baggage security screening at airports in Canada is provided by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA). For the most current information and tips to avoid delays during this important process, please go to www.catsa-acsta.gc.ca
Flight Check-In
A frequent question received by The Calgary Airport Authority is &amp;ldquo;When should I arrive at the airport for my flight?&amp;rdquo;
Each airline sets its own recommended check-in time dependant on the destination. Generally, one hour should be the minimum for flights within Canada and two hours for destinations outside of Canada.
Web check-in services may be available through your airline. Web check-in allows passengers to choose seats and check-in as early as 24 hours prior to departure. Check your airline&amp;rsquo;s website for more information.
Baggage Allowances
Each airline determines its own luggage allowance policies. Luggage restrictions can include weight, number of bags permitted, number of bags to be checked without charge, as well as size and number of carry-on items permitted on-board.
Please check with your airline for more information.
Parking
Travellers can park closer this holiday season in YYC&amp;rsquo;s surface Economy Lot. Park for as low as $9.95 per day or $39.95 per week.
YYC offers attractive parking rates in all of our lots, including $59 per week in Parkade 2 and $99 per week in Parkade 1. With so many choices, parking at YYC has never been easier.
Visit yyc.com for more information on the various parking options available, and try our new parking rate calculator to find the best rate and lot to match your parking needs.
Picking someone up at YYC over the holidays? Don&amp;rsquo;t forget about the free 30 minute parking in the short-term parking area and the Cell Phone Park and Wait lot.
The Cell Phone lot is located on the north side of Airport Road (just to the right as you enter YYC), before the parkade entrance&amp;mdash;just look for the purple and white signs! Arriving passengers will be able to collect their items, call their ride waiting in the Cell Phone lot and meet them at the designated area on the Arrivals level. Fast, easy and free!
Other ground transportation options include taxis, sedans, the YYC airport shuttle or Calgary Transit. Associated Cab and Allied Limousine are YYC&amp;rsquo;s on-demand taxi and sedan ground transportation services available on the Arrivals level 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Visit yyc.com for more information on these great transportation options.
YYC Events and Entertainment
While visiting YYC this holiday season, be sure to check out one of the many choirs, bands, and quartets performing throughout the airport. Come visit the &amp;ldquo;Snow Queen&amp;rdquo; as we welcome YYC&amp;rsquo;s first living statue from December 21-24. Just in case you didn&amp;rsquo;t have time to wrap that last minute gift, volunteers will be wrapping presents behind security for those travelling through Concourses A or D from December 20-24. If you have the time, be sure to check out the Festival of Trees &amp;ndash; located throughout the airport and decorated in a variety of creative themes. Finally, if you are arriving or departing YYC on December 23 and 24, look for one of our White Hat Volunteers for a warm western welcome and a tasty holiday treat.

    <description>
Regional carrier&#39;s head office will be in Calgary
CALGARY, Oct. 31, 2012 /CNW/ - WestJet today announced that Calgary will be home to WestJet Encore&#39;s headquarters. The decision was made after a thorough review of various airports and a variety of factors. With consideration to the operational needs of WestJet Encore during its initial launch phase and as it grows to full maturity, Calgary was determined to be the best fit for the airline and its people.
WestJet and the Calgary Airport Authority will conduct a joint study to determine the exact location of an anticipated 40,000 square foot maintenance facility and office space. Its specific location will be announced once a final decision is made. WestJetters who will provide corporate support to WestJet Encore will be located in WestJet&#39;s LEED Gold certified campus building, also located in Calgary.
&quot;We&#39;re very pleased to announce that WestJet Encore&#39;s headquarters will be in Calgary,&quot; said Gregg Saretsky, WestJet President and CEO. &quot;Calgary has been WestJet&#39;s home since we began operations in 1996. As WestJet Encore looks to replicate the success of WestJet, the decision to do so from a Calgary headquarters felt right for us operationally and felt right for our WestJetters. We&#39;re happy to welcome the Calgary International Airport to our new WestJet Encore family.&quot;
&quot;Today&#39;s announcement by WestJet is great news for YYC, the City of Calgary and the Province of Alberta,&quot; said Garth Atkinson, President and CEO of The Calgary Airport Authority. &quot;WestJet already has a significant corporate and operational presence at YYC and the addition of the WestJet Encore head office and maintenance facility will greatly enhance the vitality of YYC as a major Canadian hub airport.&quot;
The location of the headquarters will not determine where the airline&#39;s operations will begin next year. As previously communicated, a list of the first communities to be served by WestJet Encore will be announced in early 2013 with eventual service from coast to coast.

    <description>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 19, 2012
- Operation Paratus-

CALGARY, AB &amp;ndash; A mock emergency response training exercise, Operation Paratus, took place this morning at Calgary International Airport (YYC). Operation Paratus, which simulated the collision of fictitious airlines Vega Airlines 123 and Vega Airline 987, provided multiple agencies with the opportunity to practice their emergency response plans and coordinate communication between airport, airline and emergency agencies that would be involved in the event of aircraft incident.
Numerous government and support agencies responded including the City of Calgary&amp;rsquo;s Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services, Calgary Police Service, Transport Canada, NAV CANADA and the Transportation Safety Board. Emergency response personnel treated and triaged a number of volunteer &amp;lsquo;casualties&amp;rsquo; who were in full make-up and were given pre-scripted visible and hidden symptoms.
United Airlines tested their emergency response plan by playing the airline&amp;rsquo;s role, with volunteer airline staff assisted &amp;lsquo;family and friends&amp;rsquo; meeting both Vega Airline flights.
&amp;ldquo;Training exercises like Operation Paratus are an essential part of assessing how YYC&amp;rsquo;s plans work during an incident, in addition to how they work in partnership with the numerous agencies that also play a role in emergency response at the airport,&amp;rdquo; said Garth Atkinson, President and CEO of The Calgary Airport Authority. &amp;ldquo;Operation Paratus required months of planning by the Authority and our partners, and I am confident that lessons learned here today will only make our collective emergency response plans even stronger.&amp;rdquo;

    <title>HSBC’S Latest branding Campaign Makes First North American Landing at Calgary International Airport</title>
    <link>http://www.calgaryairport.com/News/tabid/91/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/12/language/en-US/HSBCS-Latest-branding-Campaign-Makes-First-North-American-Landing-at-Calgary-International-Airport.aspx</link>
    <description>

HSBC Bank Canada and The Calgary Airport Authority have unveiled one of the most extensive branding campaigns to ever take place at Calgary International Airport (YYC).&amp;nbsp;

Entitled &amp;lsquo;In the Future&amp;rsquo;, HSBC&amp;rsquo;s latest global brand campaign will feature prominently across the interior and exterior of 34 jet bridges in the airport&amp;rsquo;s domestic, international and U.S. transborder areas. YYC is the first airport in North America to display the newest HSBC global brand campaign.

Robin Penfold, Senior Vice President and Head of Commercial Banking, Prairie Region, HSBC Bank Canada said: &amp;ldquo;More and more Canadians are taking to the skies each year, travelling the globe for work and pleasure. As the leading international bank in Canada, we are uniquely positioned to meet the financial services needs of these globally-minded travellers. HSBC&amp;rsquo;s latest brand campaign reflects our international connectivity and expertise, and highlights the forces that will shape our world tomorrow -- many of which are clearly visible today.&amp;rdquo;

The number of international travellers entering or returning to Canada climbed to just under 26.9 million in the first quarter of 2012 &amp;ndash; a 7.3% increase compared the same period last year.&amp;nbsp; Canadian residents made over 5.7 million international trips in April 2012 alone &amp;ndash; a 4.5% increase over the previous year.*

Stephan Poirier, Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer for The Calgary Airport Authority, said: &amp;ldquo;We are always looking for new and innovative ways to diversify our commercial revenue at YYC. This allows us to build, expand and maintain one of Canada&amp;rsquo;s busiest airports without relying solely on aeronautical fees, keeping operating costs at YYC among the lowest in the country. Calgary&amp;rsquo;s strong business sector and growing international passenger traffic, makes YYC a great home for HSBC to market their services.&amp;rdquo;

The agreement between HSBC Bank Canada and Pattison Outdoor Advertising, a leader in out-of-home advertising and the indoor and outdoor advertising service provider at YYC, gives HSBC the exclusive rights to brand the exterior and interior space of all the jet bridges and fixed links between the terminal and the aircraft, across the entire airport.

Jet bridge advertising is a concept pioneered by the HSBC Group and launched at London&amp;rsquo;s Heathrow Airport in 2001. The HSBC Group is a global innovator in major branding initiatives holding the jet bridge-branding rights to some 43 airports in 21 countries worldwide including some of most recognizable in the world such as Heathrow (London), Los Angeles International Airport, Charles de Gaulle (Paris), Dubai International Airport, Hong Kong International Airport, and Benito Juarez International Airport (Mexico City).&amp;nbsp; In Canada, the jet bridges are also branded at Pearson International Airport (Toronto), Vancouver International Airport, and Montreal-Trudeau International Airport.

allows some passengers to leave their laptops in their carry-on bag during the screening process.

The pilot started June 19 at the Trusted Traveller CATSA/Nexus Security Line at the Calgary International Airport (Concourse &quot;A&quot;).

&quot;CATSA is always looking at ways to improve the passenger experience while maintaining the highest level of security,&quot; said Yves
Duguay, CATSA&#39;s Senior Vice-President, Operations and Customer Experience. &quot;This pilot project could lead to shorter wait times
and enhanced convenience for air travellers.&quot;

Preparation in advance of screening promotes lower wait time, faster screening and increased passenger satisfaction. Allowing
passengers to leave their laptops in carry-on bags has the potential to achieve improvements in all of these areas.

For more information, please visit www.catsa.gc.ca or
www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/prog/nexus/

CATSA, established in 2002, is a Crown corporation responsible for:

Might takes flight at city&amp;rsquo;s first ever plane pull challenge

June 24th, 2012 &amp;ndash; Calgary, AB &amp;ndash; United Way volunteer and Strongman Champion, Marshall Ennis, officiated over Calgary&amp;rsquo;s first-ever Pulling for U event with 24 teams competing to pull a 180,000 lb. UPS Airbus A300 aircraft over a distance of 50 feet in the least amount of time on the tarmac at YYC.

&amp;ldquo;We are thrilled to co-host such a bold and exciting event alongside UPS and The Calgary Airport Authority who have been instrumental in its success,&amp;rdquo; said Dr. Lucy Miller, President and CEO of United Way of Calgary and Area.&amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;Behind the tremendous success of this event were our generous event sponsors, AltaLink and NCS Oilfield Services, the competing teams and their individual sponsors who pulled together to help make Calgary a great city for everyone. Change starts here!&amp;rdquo;

While some teams got in the spirit by dressing up in costumes, others were in it to win.&amp;nbsp; Winning Gold with a time of 16.65 seconds was the 15 member University of Calgary Dinos team.&amp;nbsp; Close behind winning Silver was Nexen Inc. with a time of 17.01 seconds and winning Bronze was the UPS Brown Hornets with a finishing time of 17.05 seconds.

&amp;ldquo;The Calgary Airport Authority was pleased to join UPS, another long-time United Way supporter, in co-hosting YYC&amp;rsquo;s first plane pull event,&amp;rdquo; commented Jody Moseley, spokesperson for the Authority.&amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;This is another example of the YYC airport community pulling together to help build a greater future for our city.&amp;rdquo;

All event registration and other proceeds from the event will go towards United Way, which will help support more than 200 programs. A UPS truck stuffed with food items will be generously donated to the Calgary Women&amp;rsquo;s Centre, one of 100 United Way supported local agencies.

&amp;ldquo;Teams literally pulled together to help support an incredible organization &amp;ndash; United Way,&amp;rdquo; exclaimed John Dumigan, Prairie Division Manager for UPS Canada.&amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;UPS feels very fortunate to be part of an event that honours and supports the efforts of an organization dedicated to supporting thousands of Calgarian&amp;rsquo;s each year.&amp;rdquo;

In addition to the Gold, Silver and Bronze category winners for fastest times, were also United Way&amp;rsquo;s Agency Rockstar team, who were presented with the Spirit Award.

    <description>Well prepared luggage reduce screening time
Calgary, March 15, 2012 &amp;ndash; Whether planning a spring break ski trip or an escape to a sunny destination, the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) offers passengers some helpful packing tips that will allow them to focus on their destination and eliminate some of the stresses of air travel.
The following rules apply at airport security checkpoints:
Liquids: Liquids, aerosols and gels such as sunscreen, hair gel, hand cream and perfume, should be packed in checked baggage. Liquid items are only allowed in carry-on luggage when packed in containers with a capacity of 100 ml or less. The containers must fit comfortably in one clear, closed and re-sealable plastic bag with a capacity of no more than 1 litre. One plastic bag per person is allowed and at the security checkpoint must be removed from carry-on baggage and placed in a bin.
Food products: Solid food may be packed in carry-on baggage. Food items that are liquid or gel-based are subject to the restrictions listed above.
Duty-free purchases: CATSA recommends that all duty-free purchases be placed in checked baggage.
Electronic Devices: The following items do not need to be removed from cases or bags to be screened:

    Cell phones
    MP3 music players
    E-book readers
    Portable DVD players
    Tablets

Laptops and gaming consoles: These items must be removed from carrying cases and laptop bags and placed in a bin at the checkpoint.
Sporting equipment: Most sports equipment, including skis, snowboards and golf clubs, are not allowed as carry-on baggage. These items should be placed in checked or oversized baggage.
Dress for success: A passenger&amp;rsquo;s clothing can significantly affect the time it takes to get through screening. By following these tips, they can speed up the screening process and decrease the likelihood of setting off the walk-through metal detector:

    Remove coats, jackets and blazers and place them in the bins provided.
    Dress comfortably with easy-to-remove outerwear, jackets and belts.
    Limit jewelry to small earrings, watches and wedding bands/engagement rings.
    Wear clothing without snaps, metal buttons or studs.
    Avoid wearing shoes with metal arches, buckles, steel toes or shanks.
    Avoid wearing belts with metal buckles.
    Remove hidden body piercings before you fly.
    Be ready to empty all contents of your shirt and pant pockets and place these items in the bins before passing through the walk-through metal detector.

To make the screening experience as smooth as possible, air travellers should contact their air carrier for the amount and size of items permitted as carry-on. They can also consult CATSA&amp;rsquo;s &amp;ldquo;Pack Smart&amp;rdquo; web page and &amp;ldquo;Prep &amp;amp; Fly&amp;rdquo; travel tool to create their own personal packing checklist. This information as well as wait times at the screening checkpoints are available on CATSA&amp;rsquo;s website (www.catsa.gc.ca) and mobile site (m.catsa.gc.ca).

&quot;This announcement shows the continuous investment Air Canada is making in the Calgary market which is consistent with the Airport Authority&#39;s plans to constantly improve air service from the region we serve. &amp;nbsp;It also gives us the distinction of being one of only three airports in Canada to service both Asia and Europe, year round, on a scheduled basis consolidating Calgary&#39;s position as a major passenger and cargo hub,&quot; said&amp;nbsp;Stephan Poirier, Chief Commercial Officer for the Calgary Airport Authority.

Bruce Okabe, President &amp;amp; Chief Executive Officer, Travel Alberta commented, &quot;We are very pleased that Air Canada has decided to expand service from Narita. It is testament to the confidence they have in Alberta as a year round tourism destination. Japan is a key market for Alberta and has shown strong inbound growth since the service started in 2010.&quot;
Calgary-Tokyo year-round, non-stop service complements Air Canada&#39;s daily year-round Vancouver-Tokyo and Toronto-Tokyo non-stop flights.&amp;nbsp;The carrier will offer 19 flights each week from Canada to Tokyo&#39;s Narita International Airport this summer and 17 flights each week during the winter.
