FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 15, 2012

The Calgary Airport Authority Introduces New Energy Efficient Cars

The Calgary Airport Authority is introducing ‘Smart Cars’ to its fleet of airside escort vehicles, which will be used on the many construction projects currently underway at YYC.

The Smart Cars have 3-cylinder engines and average 5.3 litres of gasoline per 100 kilometres. The new efficient YYC vehicles will be able to drive the length of new 14,000 foot runway 148 times on one tank of gas, making them a smart choice as YYC continues to strive to be a leader in sustainability.

“YYC is already experiencing a high level of construction activity with the Airport Development Program, and that activity level will only increase as we continue to develop our facilities to meet the needs of our growing economy. These new smart cars will play an important role in reducing gas consumption and our environmental footprint,” said Garth Atkinson, President and CEO of The Calgary Airport Authority. “The Authority is always looking for new forward-thinking ways to improve efficiency and I believe that these new vehicles will be a great investment for our airport.”

The Airport Development Program includes the construction of a new 14,000 ft runway and a new international concourse, adding 22-new gates at YYC and doubling the size of the existing terminal building.

The Calgary Airport Authority is a not-for-profit, non-share capital corporation incorporated under the Alberta Regional Airports Authorities Act. Since 1992, it has been responsible for the management, maintenance and development of Calgary International Airport and Springbank Airport under long-term lease from the Government of Canada.
