International Facilities Project

  • New East Concourse to meet International passenger demand
  • Location chosen to ensure long term passenger demand can be achieved through future expandability
  • Estimated cost $1.3B ($2008)

Timeline
2008 - 2010 Design and minor enabling construction projects
2011 - 2015 Major Construction

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2011 and will initiate the closure of Barlow Trail from 78th Avenue to the Airport Terminal Building. The new International Concourse will incorporate sustainable design principles, cognizant of the need to create additional space, reduce energy consumption and minimize environmental impact.

Parallel Runway

  • To be constructed on airport land between the Air Terminal Building and 36th Street NE
  • Aeronautical Zoning protection in place mid 1970's
  • Land Use protection - Airport Vicinity Protection Act 1979 (Provincial Legislation)
  • Must be operational by 2014 to meet forecast traffic demand
  • 14,000 feet long x 200 feet wide and associated taxiways and infrastructure
  • North-South (16L-34R) orientation
  • Estimated cost $500M ($2008)

Timeline
2008 - 2011 Preliminary design and Environmental Assessment activities
2011 - 2012 Detailed Design
2012 - 2014 Construction

As the most important 14,000 feet in Alberta, the additional runway will initiate the closure of Barlow Trail from McKnight Blvd. to 78th Avenue NE in 2012.

North East City Road Network

  • The Authority's 2004 Master Plan confirmed the requirement to close Barlow Trail between McKnight Blvd. and the Air Terminal due to the required layout and configuration of the future parallel runway and its associated taxiways.
  • During 2004, City of Calgary Transportation Planning indicated its plans would include an eastward extension of Airport Trail crossing airport lands via a tunnel under the future parallel runway.
  • In 2007, the City of Calgary advised the Authority they would not be able to meet the construction timeline required for the eastward extension of Airport Trail and that due to the high cost associated with the roadway extension, other network alternatives would be considered.
  • Airport ground transportation planning in the proximity of the Air terminal Building was modified in 2008 to reflect the removal of an Airport Trail eastward extension by the City of Calgary.
